It seems common sense to believe that twenty centuries of Catholicism have produced a consistent, firm, true, and therefore liberating moral doctrine. Of all the papal encyclicals published after the Second Vatican Council, “The Splendor of Truth” (Veritatis Splendor) by Saint John Paul II is key both to understanding the foundations of that doctrine and to combating the errors that haunt it.
