At the top there was a large flame that was fed with wood and oil, and it is said that its light could be seen more than 50 kilometers away . It is also believed that a mirror was used to reflect sunlight during the day. Unfortunately, the Lighthouse of Alexandria was damaged and destroyed by a series of earthquakes in the Middle Ages, but its legacy is still kept alive today, for example on the city's flag. Temple of Artemis A single column The only and solitary reconstructed column that remains from the Temple of Artemis Creative commons Ephesus, in modern-day Turkey, was a place where a great deal of trade was concentrated. There was the famous Temple of Artemis, also known as the Artemision. Built in 356 BC, this temple had 127 marble columns, each of them 18 meters high . It was one of the largest temples ever built and is said to have been the first to be completely made of marble. But not everything was easy for the temple, as it suffered flood damage and was burned down several times over a period of three hundred years. It even had to be completely rebuilt twice.
