Did you know that the construction and operation of buildings is one of the most polluting sectors? This happens, in part, because some of the most used materials, such as concrete or steel, demand a large amount of natural resources, consume a lot of energy and produce a large amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Can we do something about it? The answer is yes. The use of carbon neutral and locally adapted materials (such as wood, raw earth, clay or bamboo, among others) can be one of the most effective solutions to this problem. To face this challenge, and others that are being addressed in this series of blogs , the Ministers of Housing and Urban Development of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) met on April 10 and 11 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to celebrate the Forum of Ministers and Highest Authorities of Housing and Urban Planning of Latin America and the Caribbean ( MINURVI). The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in its role as regional leader in green financing and sustainable housing, did not miss that meeting.

In the Housing and Urban Development Division of the IDB we design and implement a diverse portfolio of projects that promote resilient and low-carbon growth in LAC cities to Phone Number List improve people's quality of life. We are also the main source of knowledge for urban development in the region. Therefore, today we will address a central issue for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): low-carbon, resilient and locally adapted construction materials. A dual challenge: the environmental crisis and the massive demand for housing The construction sector is growing at an unprecedented rate. It is estimated that 230 billion square meters of new buildings will be built worldwide in the next 40 years . While this need is addressed, we have the opportunity to decide on its design, quality and materials to promote resilience and decarbonize the construction and housing sector.

The objective is to step on the accelerator to achieve sustainable, climate-resilient urbanization with low greenhouse gas emissions. Wood is a renewable and recyclable material, which insulates 400 times better than steel and 15 times better than concrete. Why do low-carbon building materials play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions? CO2 emissions derived from the construction and operation of buildings have increased to their highest level so far, representing 37 % of total global CO2 emissions from energy consumption in 2021 . In fact, construction materials – concrete, steel, aluminum, glass and bricks – already account for 9% of total CO2 emissions from energy consumption . Therefore, the sector can reduce its impact by seeking alternative materials, decarbonizing conventional materials such as cement and reducing emissions throughout the material life cycle, from production to transport, installation and final disposal.
